Guess who?

Answer: Ubu Roi (King Ubu)...

...in the play of the same name by Alfred Jarry, premiered on December 10th, 1896. Congratulations to limine for correctly naming this character in comment #14. Jarry was a remarkably prescient writer whose work influenced Dada, Surrealism, Beckett, Ionesco all the way through Duchamp, Monty Python and performance art. He invented pataphysics, "the science of imaginary solutions" and was a passionate bicyclist. Some of Jarry's most important work has been published in English. Roger Shattuck's The Banquet Years has a great section on Jarry (and is generally a very good read).

[original posting and clue: Does anyone out there know who this is? Prizes are admiration, adulation and eternal respect. Extra points for getting the toothpick reference.]
